Senator Cardin Introduces Bird Conservation Act

Senator Cardin

Last week, Audubon filled the great hall at the Organization of American States, joining conservation leaders from the U.S. and beyond to celebrate the 10th Anniversary of the Neotropical Migratory Bird Conservation Act. Senior Interior Department officials were in attendance, as were Ambassadors from Brazil, Panama, the Bahamas, and the Dominican Republic. Both the Interior Department and our international partners recognized the important contributions of this seminal act to hemispheric conservation and called for its continued support. Meanwhile, Senator Ben Cardin (D-MD), one of the most steadfast and outspoken champions for bird and wildlife conservation in the U.S. Senate, introduced his bill aiming to reauthorize the Act and increase funding. Look for an opportunity to voice your support for international bird conservation soon through our alert system.

Action Update

Important victory for Joshua Tree National Park

Last month, more than 11,000 of you sent messages urging the Obama administration to oppose a developer's petition to build the country's largest garbage dump on 3,500 acres of federal land surrounded by Joshua Tree National Park. All told, the administration received more than 106,000 comments from around the country, and we are thrilled to report that, on February 25th, the Interior Department reversed its decades-long position and opposed the dump developer's petition to the U.S. Supreme Court. This substantially weakens the developer's case and may persuade the Supreme Court to reject the petition, leaving in place lower court rulings that protect the park. Thanks (and congratulations!) to all of you who helped achieve such a remarkable victory for this iconic American treasure

Nancy Speaks

Hi Luke,

It's a new day in Congress and a dark day for women's reproductive health.
Fight back.

The news from Capitol Hill yesterday was astounding.
We're two weeks into the new Congress, and one of the first legislative priorities from the anti-choice leadership was to introduce an abortion-coverage ban we call "Stupak on Steroids." This is one of the most far-reaching anti-choice measures I have seen.
We need every outraged pro-choice American to fight against this attack.
If you thought that the Stupak abortion-coverage ban in health-care reform was bad, this new bill is even worse. And anti-choice speaker of the House, John Boehner, has said that this bill is "one of our highest legislative priorities."i
Your support is urgently needed -- a vote on this bill could be imminent! We must pull out all the stops. Please donate before it's too late.
If enacted, the "Stupak on Steroids" bill would:
Impose the Stupak abortion ban on the entire new health-care system.
Impose tax penalties on millions of Americans , effectively raising the price of health insurance if the plan covers abortion care. This is outrageous, considering 87 percent of private insurance plans offer abortion care.
Make it more difficult for survivors of incest and rape to access abortion care.
Permanently ban abortion access for women in the military.
Donate today before it's too late. My team and I are working overtime. We are everywhere from NPR to Fox News, and we have been quoted in Politico and the New York Times. We are also working closely with our pro-choice allies in Congress, and educating mixed-choice legislators.
But in order to stop outrageous attacks on our reproductive rights, we need supporters like you by our side. Help us ramp up our efforts to fight this egregious bill.
If the "Stupak on Steroids" bill passes in the House, our anti-choice opponents have a strategy to ram it through the Senate, where we only have 40 pro-choice allies we can count on. According to CQ Weekly, anti-choice activists "want the House to quickly pass Smith's bill and later attach it as an amendment to a must-pass measure needing Senate action."ii
We must do all we can to protect a woman's right to choose and defeat this and other horrendous attacks on our reproductive freedom.
Please donate today.
My best,

Nancy Keenan
President, NARAL Pro-Choice America

Hello Everybody,

Victory!!!!!

Today the the Senate defeated Senator Murkowski's Resolution to cripple the Clean Air Act, and let oil and other corporate polluters off the hook.
By a narrow margin, the Senate voted 53-47 to uphold EPA's authority to regulate greenhouse gas pollution and put science ahead of politics when it comes to public health and putting our country on a clean energy path.
Thank you for sending emails to your Senators — more than once! It took a strong and concerted outcry from many Americans to defeat this resolution. Our work is not finished until we have comprehensive energy and climate legislation but we will continue to work toward that goal and we know we can count on your help.
Thank you!
